Not just planets

In Vedic astrology, the nine grahas are not just celestial bodies — they are cosmic forces that influence every part of your life. The word "graha" literally means "to seize" or "to grasp." These forces take hold of different parts of your experience depending on where they sit in your chart.

Seven of them are physical planets (including the Sun and Moon, which Vedic astrology treats as planets). Two of them — Rahu and Ketu — are shadow planets, the north and south lunar nodes. They do not have physical bodies, but Auntie will tell you they are some of the most powerful forces in any chart.

Each graha rules certain signs, governs specific life themes, and carries its own personality. When Auntie reads your chart, she is reading how these nine forces interact with each other, the signs they occupy, and the houses they activate.

The 9 grahas

Sun
Surya (Sun)
The soul, authority, father, vitality. Rules Simha (Leo). The Sun is your core identity — who you are when everything else is stripped away. Its placement shows where you seek recognition.
Moon
Chandra (Moon)
The mind, emotions, mother, intuition. Rules Karka (Cancer). The most important graha in Vedic astrology. Your Moon sign is what Auntie reads every single day.
Mars
Mangal (Mars)
Energy, courage, conflict, drive. Rules Mesha (Aries) and Vrishchika (Scorpio). Mars is raw willpower. It shows how you fight, what you fight for, and whether you know when to stop.
Mercury
Budha (Mercury)
Intellect, communication, commerce, adaptability. Rules Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo). Mercury shapes how you think, speak, and process information. Quick but sometimes scattered.
Jupiter
Guru (Jupiter)
Wisdom, expansion, fortune, spirituality. Rules Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces). The great benefic. Jupiter opens doors — but you still have to walk through them.
Venus
Shukra (Venus)
Love, beauty, pleasure, creativity. Rules Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra). Venus governs what you desire, what you find beautiful, and how you experience joy.
Saturn
Shani (Saturn)
Discipline, delay, karma, endurance. Rules Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius). Saturn teaches through restriction. What it gives comes slowly, but it lasts.
Rahu
Rahu (North Node)
Obsession, ambition, worldly desire, illusion. No physical body — a shadow planet. Rahu amplifies whatever it touches and creates intense hunger. It shows where you are chasing something, sometimes blindly.
Ketu
Ketu (South Node)
Detachment, spirituality, past life karma, liberation. No physical body — Rahu's counterpart. Ketu dissolves what it touches. It shows where you have already mastered something and must now let go.
