Your life has chapters

The dasha system is one of the most powerful tools in Vedic astrology — and one that Western astrology does not have. It divides your life into planetary periods, each ruled by a specific graha, each with its own flavour and focus.

The most commonly used system is Vimsottari dasha, which maps a 120-year cycle across all nine grahas. Your starting point in this cycle is determined by the nakshatra your Moon occupied at birth. From there, the sequence is fixed: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury — repeating endlessly.

Each major period (maha dasha) lasts years. Within each maha dasha, there are sub-periods (antar dashas) ruled by each of the other planets, adding nuance and texture to the broader theme.

Auntie tracks your current dasha because it tells her what chapter of life you are in. A Saturn dasha is not the same as a Venus dasha. Reading your daily horoscope without knowing your dasha is like reading a book review without knowing which chapter you are on.

The 9 periods and their lengths

Each planet rules a maha dasha of a specific length. The total cycle is 120 years.

How Auntie uses dashas

Your dasha is woven into every personalised reading in this app. Your daily horoscope factors in your current maha dasha and antar dasha. Your year ahead report maps key transitions when your sub-period shifts. Your birth chart reading explains the broader arc of your dasha timeline.

This is what makes Vedic astrology predictive, not just descriptive. Auntie does not just tell you who you are — she tells you what season you are in, and what is likely coming next.
